Optimizing your website in Magento

Home Page

The first impression is very important to capture the attention of customers, that's why a well-optimized and attractive home page is a must for your website.

The first step is to modify the name of our default home page for one that is more meaningful as it could be the name of your website or your store.

To do this you must go to Content > Pages > Homepage > Edit

In addition to changing the title of the home page, another important aspect is to fill in the search engine optimization fields such as keywords, this will help you to have a higher position in the search engines.

Configure canonical tags for SEO

Within your ecommerce there may be several different URLs linking to the same page within your store. A canonical URL is an address that is chosen as "preferred" for indexing by search engines, that allows them to indicate which page is the main one when it has duplicate or very similar content.

To make the configuration you must go to: Store > Configuration > Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization.

Adding metadata in Magento

Metadata is important information about a content, and it is a tool that helps to improve and optimize SEO positioning in major search engines. It helps us to give more visibility to our products or content in general.

Search engine optimization includes: the meta title, meta description and meta keywords.

Meta title: Through the Meta title we can show the title of the page. Whether it is a product page or a page that shows your content.

Most browsers can display the first 50 to 60 characters that is why it is recommended to keep them in that length.

Meta description: This is the text that appears below the title of a search result. The purpose is to describe the content of the page. The optimal number of characters should be between 150 and 160.

Keywords: Keywords are words that relate to your products or content.

There are different ways to add metadata in Magento depending on the level you want to add it to.

  • Products:

To add metadata to your products go to Catalog > Product > Choose a product > Edit > Search Engine Optimization.

  • Categories:

You can configure metadata at the category level by following: Catalog > Categories > Search Engine Optimization.

  • Pages:

You can also add metadata to each page by going to Content > Pages > Select page > Search Engine Optimization.

 

Alt tags for images

The alt is a description of the visual elements of the image, it helps search engines to be able to identify your images and it is also the text that is displayed in case the image fails to load.

It is important to keep all images with this tag and with a good description.

From Magento you can add these tags to your product images by going to Catalog > Products > Choose the product > Edit > Images and Videos > Select the image.
